Summary: The PoweR-LIBS project aims to develop an innovative diagnostic procedure for rapid, remote, and real-time assessment of the functional condition of synthetic insulators in outdoor high-voltage power transmission lines. The procedure is based on the technique of Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) which allows the physicochemical characterisation of the surface of synthetic insulators and correlation with their functional state. In the context of the proposed research, the construction of an integrated system is planned that will implement, based on advanced remote sensing technology, the application of the LIBS technique in the field (Remote-LIBS or R-LIBS) for the characterisation of synthetic insulators without the need to remove them from the transmission lines. At the same time, appropriate computational tools, based on the use of advanced machine learning algorithms and neural networks, will be developed for the processing and evaluation of LIBS spectral data in order to achieve reliable categorisation of insulators with respect to their physical, functional characteristics. The diagnostic process involves the use of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) to visually inspect the insulators to identify more accurately, on the surface of each insulator, the appropriate analysis area with the R-LIBS system.
